As I've been compiling the dedicated articles on particular sets, I've found a need to include some sort of metric by which to indicate a set's rarity. While dates the set was available generally will inform its rarity, there's often more nuance at play.

For example, while the 042 Jumbo Brick Pull Toy was produced from 1965-67, surviving packaging is incredibly, incredibly rare due to it being a preschooler toy, its box serving no storage function, and the set generally not selling well. It would easily rank above certain set variants like the flat box 705 Basic Set that was only available for 1961.

That's another thing. Unless otherwise noted, the index is taking into account a complete, in box example. We can absolutely mention the rarity of certain stand-out/exclusive elements, but beyond that, generally its more useful to consider a proper example.

Also note that this is not based on any measurable numbers or metrics. It is simply my own experience and opinions given the current climate. Though unless a warehouse is opened up, generally expect the ranking to stay the same or even increase over time.

Not all variants will be measured, as at that point my opinion will become arbitrary. A good example of variants that we will measure are the three for the 905 Doll Set(normal, canister, and capsule). Ranking each patent or tabbed box variant would lead to me simply guessing instead of providing my experience, as I've not been collecting for every small print variant and I don't imagine many people are either. This also includes Canadian variants, just assume those to be at least 4/7 if not higher.

Also note this is not a measure of value. A higher rank does not translate to buyer impulse.

Below is the index, starting at the least rare:

1 - Everywhere: You could accidentally collect one.

2 – Common: Several are for sale right now.

3 – Uncommon: There may not be one available but you won't have to wait long.

4 – Somewhat Rare: Some patience required, but you're still likely to be able to get one.

5 – Rare: A lot of patience required, and you'll be up against other patient collectors from here on out.

6 – Very Rare: You can go years without seeing one for sale again.

7 – Mythical: Maybe I don't need a complete Samsonite collection.
